Top 10 Lessons Learned for 2006

December 30, 2006

2006 is the best and worst year of my life. Worst — because really, the worst things happened to me in all aspects of my life. Betrayals, failures, failures and more failures. But, having said that, best — because indeed, there’s the calm after each storm.

Each year in our lives is rich in all kinds of experiences that will always teach us a lesson or two. For the year that is about to end, here’s what I feel are the most valuable lessons I have learned. Some lessons I learned from what people around me went through. Some I had to learn myself for the first time. While some, I guess I had to re-learn them time and time again. =p

The New Face of Spam?

December 29, 2006

Previously, I was talking about how to completely block spam in your WordPress blog. Although, I am using 3 anti-spam plugins - Bad Behavior, Akismet and Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam, I am still receiving few spam comments. So I arrived at a conclusion that no single plugin (or if there is, I have yet to find out) can prevent your blog from spam comments. Bad Behavior was effective enough because it has prevented automated spam bots from accessing this web site, although some can still make it.

Before, I only receive spam comments such as “Nice day, best. I have the same topic in my site. Check it out (then a link to a Viagra site is provided).” or “Thanks for this great information!” then provides a link to site which intends to sell products or worse, to porn sites. These comment spams are usually three-liners. But recently, I received a comment spam disguised by its lengthy content.

Let me feature your free host!

December 29, 2006

Ph-Host.com was originally designed to provide free web hosting to Filipinos using the 10 GB reseller account from AhPlace.com was acquired by me for free. However, AhPlace had troubles in their server, which deleted all the members’ accounts, including my reseller account. Good thing that there were no members hosted by Ph-Host before AhPlace servers crashed down. More about Ph-Host.

I have decided to just convert the site to a guide for free hosting and domains. I will feature free hosts and domain providers in each entry. You can suggest your own host or other’s. This site is just starting out, though but I am aiming to expand it more, if time permits. You can suggest blog, image, web, multimedia, file or any type of host. You can also suggest a free domain provider.

It’s over

December 29, 2006

Christmas is over, the parties, the food, the gifts, boxing day (December 26 in Canada), the endless cash outlay. Finally, I can rest and enoy the time off. No wait…we have work on the 27th! Darn, just when I though I can finally get some rest, I have to go back to work.

Sometimes I wish I can just take a week off and do nothing. No laundry, no work to worry about, no cooking, no ironing. Nothing. Just sit around, watch TV or play Xbox or read a good book. But then again, I really hate taking vacations because it makes it harder to go back to work when your routine has changed.

$10,600USD Fortune Cookie

December 27, 2006

How much would you pay for a cookie?

See some eBayers bid for some useless fortune cookie (i think…) at this page. It would be much nicer to read the bidding history also.

Bracelet

December 26, 2006

I met her when Ella and I were still dating about five years back. She was an adorable person. She was my friend. She was Ella’s grandma.

I would always hear her usual greeting “Hi, Jay!” whenever she sees me especially when I pick Ella at mid-morning for a date. In a way, I have always enjoyed in the company of grandmas and that makes me feel normal all the time. I just like to talk to them and listen to their life stories and laugh. Feel like I’m still a kid listening to Lola Basyang’s stories in the afternoon.

One time, I made her a bracelet out of swarovski (not sure of the spelling) jewels that Ella and I bought at Divisoria. I asked her not to lose it.

Incredibly not credible

December 26, 2006

The other night, justice secretary Gonzales was complaining about Smith’s continued stay at the Makati City Jail citing that the Philippines has lost its credibility in the face of the international community.

He also blamed (and sarcastically thanked) Judge Gozon for the US’ decision to withdraw VFA with the AFP and the US humanitarian mission in the Bicol region. He cited a ceratin provision of the treary that makes Smith under the custody of the US Embassy.

What we should learn from Warren Buffet, the second world’s richest?

December 24, 2006

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1) He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

2) He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

3) He still lives in the same small 3 bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.

4) He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

5) He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world’s largest private jet company.

How to Completely Block Comment Spam in Your WordPress Blog?

December 24, 2006

The more you blog, the more spam comments come into your posts. As you blog more and your site gets popular and widely visited, spam comments become your primary enemy. This is where an anti-spam plugins proves to be useful. But it appears that no particular spam filter or spam killer that can be used especially in your blogs. I am currently using 3 spam-blocking plugins for this blog, but it’s not prov

The latest versions of WordPress installations come with Akismet, a spam-filtering plugin for WordPress. Akismet can be very useful especially in filtering spam comments containing numerous links, which are always a feature of spam messages. Unfortunately, it fails to do its job sometimes for flagging proper comments as spam. So it would be necessary to check the filtered spam for this error. Problems arise when you got a lot of spam, say hundreds or thousands, to review. It would take you a lot of time, or it maybe impossible for the blogger to finish checking all those spam. You cannot just delete these comments because you might disappoint your readers. Some comments may also contain important things such as a link exchange request, a relevant link to your post, etc.

Carol Kings

December 23, 2006

“Kay sigla ng gabi,
ang lahat ay kay saya.
Nagluto ang Ate
ng manok na tinola.
Sa bahay ng Kuya
ay mayroong litsunan pa.
Ang bawat tahanan,
may handang iba’t iba.”

The carolers at our neighborhood are usually little children rattling flattened bottle caps on a string of wire. Their pre-pubescent voices feel like barbed wire digging into flesh. The tone of the song is forgotten, replaced by a memorized sing-song monotone pitched at a volume that is meant to annoy, not to entertain. In our street, you pay carolers to shut up.

Office Prank

December 23, 2006

This is the funniest office prank I’ve seen. A fellow worker went on vacation and will return after Christmas, the boss and a co-worker wrapped everything on the guy’s cubicle with tin foil. And I mean everything! Scissors, monitor, chair, mouse, pen, everything!

Here are some pictures.

11 Simple Ways to Minimize Eye-Strain

December 23, 2006

Eyestrain is defined as an eye discomfort that can occur when the eyes tire after a prolonged visual task. Eyestrain can be manifested by headache or discomfort around the eyes.

These symptoms are never present when you wake, never accompanied by ultra-sensitivity to light, but is made worse by visual tasks like reading. Most often you may need a new pair of glasses or contact lenses, or the muscles that align the eyes are strained and needs a break. Health 24

Sitting several hours in front of your computers can be eye-straining. If you work at a computer for more then three hours a day you are likely to have symptoms of eye strain. This can be prevented however with these tips provided by Health 24:

1. Ensure that any close-up work or computer screen is not too close to your eyes. As a general rule, view material from as great a distance as possible, provided it can still be read easily.

2. Take frequent vision breaks (at least every hour) to relax your eye muscles. Try closing your eyes and relaxing for one minute. Other useful exercises may include rolling or blinking your eyes, or closing them tightly for a few seconds.
