Unexpected
May 31, 2007
I never expected you’d give up soon.
I never expected what you’ve been so sure before would fade so quickly.
I never expected that distance would affect you so.
I never expected you’d hurt me, despite knowing what battle scars I’ve had.
You even told me how you are also looking for the right one.
And how we fell for each other, I thought it is going to last this time.
But you let go.
I cannot understand,
how can something you’re so sure of fade away so soon?
Thursday Thirteen #18: 13 Weird Things About Me
May 31, 2007

There has been a meme, “6 Weird Things About Me”, going around and I really wanted to post it here. But since I have difficulty choosing 6 out of the numerous weird stuff that I do, I chose to post it as my Thursday Thirteen.
13 Weird Things About Me
- I’m afraid of Barney
- I like eating cold guinataan fresh from the refrigerator. Yum!
- Whenever I visit a bookstore, I buy one notebook. Any kind. But I’m especially attracted to cute covers (not covers with pictures of celebrities, please!)
- I like the smell of newly autoclaved agar plates
- I also like the smell of newly photocopied paper.

Shari, The Musical
May 31, 2007
Well, that’s rude. Must be the longest unplanned absence I’ve had since December last year. All because of a single tiny · that sucked all the blood inside me. And I’m in no mood to talk about it. I had a fever, yadda yadda blah blah.
But the past few days have served as a venue for soul-searching. What else can I do when the phone connection has been intermittent, and power has gone nuts on me? But anyway, it’s surprising to realize how much I missed on a lot of things since I started blogging regularly. Almost all of them are in line with music and love (yuck), but bear with me, eh?
The Name Project
May 31, 2007
I’ve always been fascinated with names. Whenever I meet someone for the first time, one of the first things I ask is: “What does your name mean?” A lot of people find this weird because (a) they don’t know what their name means, (b) they don’t care what their name means, or (c) they just think it’s weird of me to ask what their name means.
I think it’s sad when someone doesn’t know what their name means, and I think it’s just tragic when they don’t care. Names are names for a reason. They have meanings, and I think that it makes a difference in who we are.
Don’t believe me? I’ll give you an example.
Nominated si Mickey, Vote for Him!
May 30, 2007

When Discriminating Patients Become Insulting
May 29, 2007
In today’s times when the average person is often bombarded by images and news of “bad” hospitals “detaining” patients who cannot pay for hospital bills and “evil” doctors who are money-hungry or out to “kill” patients, people have begun developing a general mistrust of doctors. It is as if every doctor they’d encounter will give them haphazardly done medical service and then squeeze out all the money from their pockets. And this growing mistrust of doctors is hindering our efforts to improve our country’s provision of health care.
I never thought that I’d be seeing such overly-suspicious and stubborn patients until one 24-hour duty in a hospital emergency room, I encountered one. Well, actually, she’s the patient’s “mother”. Being in the Philippines, we have come to “accept” the fact that Filipinos have developed the bad habit of going to the emergency room seeking outpatient clinic services (follow-up consult after treatment of urinary tract infections, requesting lab referrals for pre-employment physical exams because they don’t have the “time” during the weekdays, which is rather unbelievable because it’s a pre-employment medical exam and it means they’re jobless so they have all the time available, etcetera).
In this case, the overly-suspicious and stubborn person (which I will call “Mara”) brought her 4-year old “son” because of some coughing, cold, and a low-grade fever. After some tests, it turned out that the kid has only a mild respiratory tract infection. I prescribed a 7-day course of Amoxicillin 250 mg/5mL syrup 5 mL every 8 hours and a paracetamol for fever. Mara argued that the dose I prescribed was not enough. I asked her why she thought so.
